A California teacher named Kauser was sanctioned for screening a TRT World video to her students that featured a Holocaust survivor protesting in support of Gaza.
The screening was part of a lesson on the Holocaust, during which more than six million Jewish people were murdered in World War II.
TRT World interviewed 90-year-old Marione Ingram outside the White House in 2024. The video later went viral and was used by Kauser during a Holocaust lesson.
In the video, Ingram said that what she was seeing in Gaza reminded her of her own experiences during the Holocaust.
She added that she was “sometimes ashamed to acknowledge that I belong to the tribe that is killing innocent people.”
A group of parents and a Zionist organisation submitted complaints to the school board.
They made false claims about TRT World and Türkiye and portrayed Ingram and Kauser as “antisemitic”.
The school board reprimanded Kauser, stating that she had discriminated against Jewish students by showing the video.
The decision sparked outrage. Several organisations and activists — including CAIR and Jewish Voice for Peace — expressed support for Kauser.
Last November, a group of 15 Jewish scholars and Holocaust experts also wrote to the school board in her support, stating that the video was not antisemitic.
Kauser declined to be interviewed on the record, citing concerns for her career and personal safety.
However, TRT World interviewed her lawyer and several supporters, who said the case reflects a broader crackdown on academic freedom.
TRT World contacted the Santa Clara Unified School District for comment but did not receive a response.
