Israeli politics has often been shaped by the idea of external threats, with leaders portraying surrounding countries as “demons” to mobilise and unite Israeli society throughout history, says Israeli journalist Gideon Levy. If Iran were no longer seen as Israel’s main existential danger, another rival could be framed in a similar way, Levy adds and says recent remarks portraying Türkiye as a potential rival reflect this long-standing pattern in Israeli politics.
