Donald Trump has urged the UK and other countries to send warships to the Strait to help reopen it and escort oil tankers.
Speaking to Sky News energy secretary, Ed Miliband says the UK is "intensively" looking at what it can do to reopen the shipping route.
He adds the government wants to "work with our allies to get the Strait reopened".
"There are a range of things that we can do, including autonomous mine hunting equipment. And that’s something we’re obviously looking at."
