The crew of Artemis II has safely returned to Earth, with their capsule plunging through the atmosphere before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on Friday, 10 April, after nearly 10 days in space.
The gumdrop-shaped Orion spacecraft, named Integrity, descended under parachutes and touched down off the coast of Southern California shortly after 5pm local time (0000 GMT), marking the end of the first human journey into the Moon’s vicinity in more than 50 years.
Over the course of the mission, Artemis II travelled more than 694,000 miles (1.1 million kilometres), completing two orbits of Earth before sweeping out towards the Moon in a dramatic flyby roughly 252,000 miles from the planet.
