As Péter Magyar is set to become Hungary’s new prime minister, with an astounding supermajority, FRANCE 24’s Senior European Editor Armen Georgian is pleased to welcome Tamás Harangozó, Hungarian jurist, politician, and Deputy Leader of the MSZP Socialists in parliament. According to Harangozó, this election is nothing short of a collective civic awakening: a moment in which citizens, across ideological lines, have prioritized the democratic health of the country over over traditional party divisions. While Harangozó’s political party wasn’t even in the running, he is hailing the restoration of Hungary’s place within the Western democratic community and the possibility of a future ideological reconfiguration within a normalised political field. The decision by their party to withdraw from the general election was not just tactical, but reflective of a broader ethical imperative to enable systemic change. For the deputy leader, what we are witnessing is not the triumph of a political camp, but the reassertion of a political direction: Europe over isolation and democratic pluralism that rejects autocratic power.
