IFRC Secretary General highlights growing danger to humanitarian workers

”You know, these workers are there to save someone else’s life, and they must not pay the price with their own lives.”

Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, stated that the IFRC has lost 12 volunteers and staff in 2026 alone, four in Iran and two in Lebanon, noting that the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems are protected under the Geneva Conventions.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry and UNRWA records, at least 1,000 healthcare workers have been killed and more than 2,000 wounded in Gaza by Israeli offensives, and at least 50 have been killed and over 180 wounded in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Red Cross.
