Mali’s junta expelled the UN peacekeeping mission and broke ties with France back in 2023, then turned to Russian-backed mercenaries but pressure on the Russia – Ukraine front means that they haven’t been able to deliver on their promises – and experts say that Mali is destabilizing as a result.
