Why is the Russian government cutting off internet access to its citizens?
In Putin’s Russia, the government has been restricting access to messaging apps such as Instagram, Telegram and Snapchat, and at points, even shutting down internet access completely.
Russian officials claim that internet curbs are necessary to keep the public safe. They declare the ultimate goal: a “sovereign internet” for a “sovereign Russia”.
Asma Khalid speaks to the BBC’s Russia Editor, Steve Rosenberg, about why this has happened and what the reaction has been on the ground in Moscow.
