There are now five confirmed cases of hantavirus in an outbreak connected to the MV Hondius cruise ship, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.
The WHO’s director-general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, told reporters that eight cases of the virus, which has been identified as the Andes strain, have been reported, with five confirmed cases and three suspected cases.
None of the remaining passengers or crew currently aboard the ship are symptomatic, but it is possible more hantavirus cases may be reported as the incubation period can be up to six weeks.
