Scottish screenwriter and Cannes Film Festival jury member Paul Laverty criticised Hollywood for blacklisting actors who publicly opposed Israel’s genocide in Palestine’s Gaza, mentioning Susan Sarandon, Javier Bardem and Mark Ruffalo at a press conference during the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 12. He expressed full solidarity with the actors, calling them “the best of us.”
Susan Sarandon, Javier Bardem, and Mark Ruffalo have faced significant professional repercussions in Hollywood for their vocal criticism of Israel’s atrocities in Gaza.
Sarandon lost roles and faced public backlash after calling the situation a “genocide.” Bardem has been dropped from projects and faced calls for boycotts after signing open letters condemning Israeli policies.
