Thousands of Lebanese families are fleeing Beirut’s southern suburbs after Israel announced plans to carry out new strikes on the area on June 1, raising fears of a major escalation in Lebanon. The warning comes as Israeli forces advance deeper into Lebanese territory in what is being described as Tel Aviv’s most extensive incursion in two decades.
The UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting on Israel’s expanded invasion in Lebanon on Monday, June 1.
Meanwhile, Iran, which is negotiating an end to its wider conflict with both Israel and the US, has said that a ceasefire in Lebanon remains a key condition for any agreement.
