A whirlwind formed over Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on May 31. Scientists from the United States Geological Survey said the spectacle was likely caused by intense heat from the lava warming the surface air, which then rose rapidly and drew in surrounding cooler air, creating a spinning column.
Kilauea, located in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, has been erupting intermittently since December 2024 and remains one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.
