Malawi, Mozambique evacuate citizens after attacks | DW News

Hundreds of foreign workers are fleeing South Africa after anti-immigrant protests turned violent, with mobs attacking homes and forcing families to run for their lives. Many of those targeted – mostly from Malawi and Mozambique – say they were driven out overnight, some hiding in the bush before reaching safety. Several countries, including Malawi, Mozambique and Ghana, are now repatriating their citizens. As tensions rise, the violence is raising urgent questions about migrant safety and growing anti-immigrant sentiment in the region. DW Correspondent Dianne Hawker explains the complex political and economic issues at the heart of the tensions.
