The US administration has been accused of fueling separatism in Canada.
Separatist groups in the province of Alberta have reportedly met several times with State Department officials and secured the organisation of an independence referendum next October after months of campaigning.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has described the referendum as “dangerous,” compared it to Brexit, and urged the United States to respect Canadian sovereignty.
