A French court has ordered TotalEnergies to count the pollution created when people burn its oil and gas—not just the emissions from its own operations. The decision was based on a French law that requires big companies to help prevent human rights abuses and environmental risks. It’s the first time this law, the Duty of Vigilance, has been applied to climate change.
