Kazakhstan released a female Amur tiger named Umit into the Ile-Balkhash nature reserve, marking the first return of the species to the country since it disappeared in 1948. The Amur tiger is closely related to the now extinct Caspian tiger that ranged across central Asia until the 1970s. Umit was one of four tigers donated by Russia as part of efforts to restore the extinct population to its former range.
