Firefighters battled a huge blaze at an oil refinery in Zawiya, Libya, after a series of drone attacks targeted oil facilities in the city. Libya’s National Oil Corporation said a drone fell near a main oil tank and pipeline network at the Zawiya Oil Refining Company, marking the third attack in two days. The NOC warned it could declare a state of “maximum emergency” and halt refinery operations entirely if the attacks continue, while no group has claimed responsibility.
The attacks underscore Libya’s ongoing security challenges, with rival administrations and armed groups continuing to wield influence despite a 2020 ceasefire that ended major fighting. The country has remained divided since 2014, following the NATO-backed uprising that overthrew longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
