A young humpback whale entangled in a heavy drumline buoy off Byron Bay, Australia, was partially freed by rescuers from the Sea World Foundation on August 12. A hook embedded in the whale’s right pectoral flipper left the fin trapped against the whale’s body. The team was able to remove the the buoy, leaving only the hook and a short length of chain attached. The rescue marked the foundation’s fifth whale rescue in five days. Rescuers say the whale’s swimming returned to a normal pattern after the buoy was removed.
