Syria’s new authorities prosecute former regime figures

A Syrian criminal court has sentenced the former regime’s Grand Mufti, its top cleric, Ahmad Hassoun, to life in prison. He’s been found guilty of crimes including inciting sectarian conflict and exploiting his position. Hassoun is the 10th major figure from the Assad’s regime to be sentenced under the new authorities. He was appointed by former regime leader Bashir al Assad as the country’s top Muslim cleric. He’s popularly known as the "barrel-bomb mufti" for his strong support of the regime and violent rhetoric against the opposition.
