More than 5,000 little penguins are being vaccinated against bird flu in Australia. The campaign aims to protect the world’s smallest penguin species, only slightly bigger than a bowling pin and weighing just under a kilogram, from an outbreak that has recorded 318 positive H5 bird flu events in wildlife as of August 25. The outbreak also recorded Australia’s first case of bird flu in a mammal following the testing of a long-nosed fur seal in South Australia.
