The hidden weakness in Europe’s economy | DW News

Electric vehicle sales are surging. But Europe is still struggling to produce their most valuable component: the battery. Instead, it remains heavily dependent on Asian suppliers.
After a string of spectacular failures, the EU now is betting billions on a battery comeback. Its goal: reduce Europe’s reliance on China and build an industry of its own.
But factories alone won’t be enough. Europe also needs the critical raw materials that go into batteries—and still relies heavily on China to process many of them.
DW gained rare access to one of Europe’s newest battery gigafactories and travelled to the continent’s biggest lithium deposit to find out: Can Europe’s battery gamble pay off?
