Residents and visitors gathered in Nejapa, El Salvador, on August 31 for Las Bolas de Fuego, a tradition in which participants throw fireballs at one another. The celebration, now in its 104th year, dates to 1922 and is linked to local legends of a volcanic eruption and a symbolic battle between Saint Jerome and the devil.
