Argentina’s President Javier Milei is stepping up the country’s push to regain control of the Falkland Islands, saying the “winds of change” are now favouring Argentina’s claim.
In a national address, Milei announced plans for a new naval base in southern Argentina and said companies involved in oil exploration around the islands could face sanctions.
The long-running dispute has gained fresh attention following Donald Trump’s comments on the UK’s position, while Argentina’s football rivalry with England has once again brought the Falklands issue into the spotlight.
The islands have been under British control for nearly two centuries. Argentina and the UK fought a 74-day war over the Falklands in 1982.
