Fishermen off Bakauheni in South Lampung were caught in a shower of ash and rocks on September 5 as Anak Krakatau erupted. Their boat was struck as smoke rose from the volcano between Java and Sumatra. All of the men escaped unharmed. The eruption sent ash as high as 15,000 metres and, as of 7 September, was still disrupting flights across Indonesia, with more than 2,300 services affected.
