Jamaica seeks legal accountability from Britain over slavery

Jamaica is asking King Charles to use a rarely exercised constitutional power to refer the issue of slavery reparations to a group of British judges. If referred, they would be asked for a formal legal opinion on whether Britain’s role in slavery created an obligation to provide redress. The move could put both the British government and Buckingham Palace in an uncomfortable position — with the King being asked, as Jamaica’s head of state, to trigger a legal examination of Britain’s historic responsibility.
