Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Rome and Milan on Wednesday, Sept. 9, protesting proposed legislation that would formally define antisemitism under Italian law.
Introduced by the far-right League party, the bill adopts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition and its illustrative examples. Critics say the framework could restrict political expression and academic debate, and potentially criminalise speech critical of Israel.
The bill, which passed the Senate in March, is now under review in the Chamber of Deputies and has drawn criticism from human rights groups, opposition parties and UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine Francesca Albanese.
