IAEA says Iran needs to re-engage, even as US opposes Iranian presence and Vienna denies visas

IAEA director general Rafael Gross spoke at the IAEA’s 70th General Conference in Vienna, urging Iran to work with the agency again, saying trust and confidence cannot be restored without renewed co-operation. His remarks came even as US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the US opposed the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation attending the annual conference, and Austria denied a visa for Iran’s nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami to attend the conference. Tehran called the visa denial unjustified and said it had summoned Austria’s charge d’affaires, adding that US pressure should not prevent host countries from fulfilling their obligations.
