For decades, Iran has hosted millions of Afghan refugees, looking for a way out of poverty. But as Iran’s economy started collapsing, the refugees have been forced out. In 2025, more than 1.9 million Afghans returned or were deported, and the US war on Iran has seen that number increase. But for many, it hardly feels like a homecoming. Ilyas Avci reports.
