Why did Serbia’s president resign to run for prime minister | DW News

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has resigned seven months before his term was due to end but he isn’t leaving politics.
Vucic is now campaigning ahead of Serbia’s October 25 parliamentary election and seeking a return to the post of prime minister. The vote comes after nearly two years of student-led protests sparked by the deadly collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024. The student movement has now entered electoral politics and is mounting a challenge to Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party.
DW speaks to political scientist and journalist Nikola Burazer, Programme Director at the Centre for Contemporary Politics and Executive Editor of European Western Balkans, about why Vucic has stepped down, the rise of the student movement, the political impact of his final presidential pardons and the advantages his party brings into the election.
