For over a century, foreign powers have meddled in Iraqi affairs. The British even installed a king that had never set foot in the country before.
In 2003, the US invaded Iraq and toppled its dictator Saddam Hussein. The last US troops only recently left Iraq, and the Iranian regime is ready to fill the void with Iranian-backed militias undermining the Iraqi state.
And, in the current US-Israeli war with Iran, Iraq has once again become a battleground, caught between the US and Iran, and under attack from all sides.
How did Iraq end up here? And will it ever be able to decide its own fate?
