Syria reopens Aleppo’s Great Umayyad Mosque after 13-year closure

Syria reopened Aleppo’s Great Umayyad Mosque on October 8, 13 years after it was closed following heavy damage in the civil war. The mosque, dating to the early eighth century, was taken out of service in 2013. Restoration began after the fall of ousted regime leader Bashar al Assad in December 2024.
