Indian authorities try to shut down a ‘Cockroach’ protest in Delhi | DW News

India’s capital has been placed under extraordinary security measures as authorities moved to stop a major protest by the ‘Cockroach’ movement. Roads were blocked, transport disrupted and protest leaders detained before thousands of demonstrators could gather in central Delhi. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) says controversial voter-roll revisions are disenfranchising citizens and undermining democracy, claims the government rejects. The standoff is becoming a major political test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comes ahead of a key electoral year. DW’s Alex Forrest Whiting speaks to political scientist Uday Chandra and Indian journalist Ashutosh.
