Anti-IMF and World Bank protests spark heavy police response in Bangkok

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered near Bangkok’s Queen Sirikit National Convention Center on October 15 to protest the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group. Marching along perimeter routes toward the venue, activists carrying banners and megaphones were blocked by heavily fortified police lines.

Protesters denounced corporate-backed investment and foreign debt policies that threaten local livelihoods, claiming that mega-projects funded or encouraged by international financial institutions systematically strip local communities of their land and natural resources. Authorities deployed rows of riot police and closed key access roads around the venue to prevent protesters from approaching international delegates.
