Australian MP loses both legs after alleged car attack | BBC News

Australian MP Helen Haines has had both her legs amputated after being allegedly attacked with a car.

Haines received severe injuries after being struck in what police say was a targeted incident outside her electoral office in Wangaratta on Monday.

During a press conference, her husband, Phil, confirmed she lost both but added "she is alive and stable".

Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.

Police have not ruled out additional charges, including attempted murder.
