Serbian police withdraw from central Belgrade after student-backed opposition’s win

Serbian police withdrew from central Belgrade after President Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat in the parliamentary election to the student-backed Student List. The movement emerged from anti-government protests sparked by the deadly collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people. Demonstrations grew into a broader challenge to allegations of corruption and concerns over democratic freedoms. With nearly 99% of votes counted, the Student List secured 52.7% of the vote, compared with 39.2% for the alliance led by Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party, according to preliminary results.
