However, one heroic Mexican man runs his canine friends pretty close in the ‘being great’ stakes. Ricardo Pimentel opened up his home to 300 homeless hounds to protect them from Hurricane Delta. And, like a modern-day Noah, it wasn’t just pooches he took in, either – there were cats, sheep, rabbits, chicks, and a hedgehog. Pimentel runs the Tierra de Animales shelter a few miles from Cancun on the Yucatán peninsula. When it became obvious the creatures’ kennels wouldn’t withstand the storm, he brought them into his house. A photo of the chaos went viral, leading to thousands of dollars in donations. But there were less appealing side-effects, too. ‘It doesn’t matter if the house is dirty – it can be cleaned,’ he told AP. ‘The things they broke can be fixed or bought again, but what’s beautiful is to see them happy, healthy, and safe, without wounds and with the possibility of being adopted.’
