There’s uproar in Somalia because the breakaway state of Somaliland recently signed a deal granting Ethiopia access to the sea. In the Memorandum of Understanding, Somaliland would lease a 20-kilometer stretch of its coastline to neighboring Ethiopia, which is land-locked. The Ethiopians in return would be the first nation to recognize Somaliland as an independent country. Somalia, meanwhile, has lashed out, calling the deal a violation of its sovereignty. It’s pledging to defend its territory by any legal means.
