The US and UK have launched joint strikes on 36 Houthi targets across 13 locations in Yemen. It comes after the US launched strikes on 85 targets in Syria and IRaq on Friday in response to a deadly drone attack on a US military base. The Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are backed by Iran, started targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea in November, disrupting global supply chains. UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said the latest strikes were “not an escalation”, and the Houthis’ attacks on vessels in the Red Sea were “illegal and unacceptable”.
The US and the UK have carried out fresh strikes on more than 30 targets linked to the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, supported by six other countries, in efforts to halt the Houthis from targeting ships in the Red Sea. These raids follow US strikes in Iraq and Syria, hitting 85 sites in retaliation for the killing of three American soldiers by Iranian-backed militants.
British fighter jets took off from an RAF base in Cyprus, marking the UK’s third participation in US-led operations in Yemen against the Iran-supported terrorist group. The Pentagon confirmed successful hits on Houthi targets across 13 locations, including the destruction of an anti-ship missile. The primary objective is to cripple the Houthis’ ability to attack cargo ships in the Red Sea, with UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps emphasizing the illegality and unacceptability of Red Sea attacks, highlighting the UK’s duty to protect innocent lives and ensure freedom of navigation.
This joint action follows US strikes in Syria and Iraq, which were in response to the death of three American troops in a drone attack believed to be carried out by militants backed by Iran. Iran has denied involvement in the attack and its association with the Houthis. President Biden, amidst his campaign, stated on social media that while the US does not seek conflict in the Middle East or elsewhere, it will respond to any harm intended towards it. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron pledged to hold Iran accountable, warning that Iran would ultimately be responsible for the actions of its backed countries.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit to the Middle East indicates that diplomacy is considered as crucial as military action. The effectiveness of these latest strikes and Iran’s influence over its proxy groups remain uncertain, with concerns that the Houthis, benefiting from the escalated conflict, will continue their operations. The situation underscores the complex dynamics involving Iran, its proxy groups, and international responses, highlighting the broader implications for regional stability and efforts to negotiate ceasefires in conflicts like that in Gaza.

US, UK strikes on Houthis in Yemen: What’s the message to Iran? | DW News
US, Britain strike Yemen’s Houthis in a new wave, retaliating for attacks by Iran-backed militants
The United States and Britain struck 36 Houthi sites in Yemen in a second wave of assaults meant to further disable Iran-backed groups that have relentlessly attacked American and international interests in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war. But Washington once more did not directly target Iran as it tries to find a balance between a forceful response and intensifying the conflict. The latest strikes against the Houthis were launched by U.S. warships and American and British fighter jets. They follow an air assault in Iraq and Syria on Friday that targeted other Iranian-backed militias and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for the drone strike that killed three U.S. troops in Jordan last weekend.

- The Terrorists Speak: BREAKING: HAMAS OFFICIAL STATEMENT “We strongly condemn the American-British bombing of the Republic of Yemen, and we consider it a blatant assault on the sovereignty of a sister Arab country, and an escalation that will drag the region into further turmoil and instability for which Washington and the Zionist occupation bear full responsibility. We renew our appreciation for the genuine Yemeni position in the victory over the oppression of the Palestinian people, who are being subjected to genocide at the hands of Zionist war criminals, and we call on the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take a decisive stance against the American aggression that violates the sovereignty of our Arab countries, and to take practical measures to stop the Zionist aggression against Gaza that has been ongoing since More than 120 days.” – Sulaiman Ahmed
