It’s been two years since Russian tanks rolled over the border into Ukraine in a full-scale invasion, bringing about what would become the biggest war in Europe since World War Two. Ukrainian and Russian lives have been changed utterly by the bloodshed and loss. Tens of thousands of troops have been killed, families have been torn apart, Ukrainian towns have been smashed to ruins and Russian troops have been accused of committing atrocities that have shocked the world. The BBC’s Ukraine Correspondent James Waterhouse looks back at two years of fighting, and what could be coming in the future.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has once again spoken out against Western policy in the war in Ukraine. He said that the EU and US strategy to defeat Russia had not worked and had only led to the deaths of thousands of Ukrainians and Russians. At the same time, in his opinion, the Russian Federation has only grown stronger during this time. In this context, Fico reiterated that the conflict in Ukraine “has no military solution”. He also claimed that “the war between Russia and Ukraine began with the speech of Ukrainian neo-Nazis in 2014”.
