Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has landed in Puerto Rico after apparently being unable to return to his country. According to local media, he arrived in the capital San Juan on Tuesday after flying from the US state of New Jersey. For the past few days, Mr Henry’s whereabouts had been unknown following a visit to Kenya. Violence in Haiti has spiralled in his absence – with armed gangs trying to take over the international airport to stop him from landing. Their leader, Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, has demanded the prime minister stand down – warning that the country is headed “straight for a civil war that will lead to genocide” otherwise.
In Haiti, political leaders are seeking to form new alliances to address the severe gang violence that has disrupted life across the country. This violence has even shut down the main airport, making it difficult for Prime Minister Ariel Henry to return. The capital, Port-au-Prince, is largely under the control of gangs, resulting in closed schools and businesses, and several fatalities.
The situation worsened when over 4,000 prisoners were freed during raids on the country’s two largest prisons. Amidst this chaos, a notable figure, Philippe, who played a significant role in the 2004 rebellion, has called for the Prime Minister’s resignation. Philippe, who has served time in the U.S. for money laundering, returned to Haiti in November.
The United States is also involved, with the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations suggesting that Prime Minister Henry should initiate a political process leading to a presidential transition and eventually, elections. The goal is to restore normalcy in Haiti.

During this turbulent period, Prime Minister Henry was in Kenya to discuss the deployment of a police force to combat the violence. There’s also talk of his plane making a stop in the Dominican Republic, although this would require a clear flight plan. The Dominican Republic expressed its willingness to help but stressed the importance of not compromising its national security.
The United Nations Secretary-General called for urgent action to support a multinational security mission in Haiti, which is not a peacekeeping force but aims to address the security needs of the Haitian people. Kenya has agreed to lead this mission with 1,000 officers, although there are legal challenges to this decision.
The violence in Port-au-Prince has escalated, with gangs attempting to take over the airport and force the current government out. This has led to around 15,000 people fleeing their homes, many of whom were already displaced. Humanitarian organizations are responding by providing food, hygiene supplies, and shelter materials to those affected.
The World Food Programme has delivered meals to displaced people, and the International Organization for Migration is distributing emergency shelter materials. The UN and humanitarian groups are urging all parties to cease the violence to allow aid to reach those in need. Currently, nearly half of Haiti’s population requires humanitarian assistance.
