The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has been described by engineers as inevitable once the container ship that hit it collided with one of its piers. But, say experts, the the bridge’s collapse may have been avoided had the piers been better protected with blocking devices known as fenders. FRANCE 24’s Andrew Hilliar explains.
