At least 129 people have been killed in a failed jailbreak at the biggest prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Officials said 24 inmates had been shot dead as they tried to escape the overcrowded Makala Prison in the capital Kinshasa, while most of the other casualties occurred due to a stampede.
Apart from the gunshots and stampede, a fire also broke out in the jail’s administrative building, food depots, and hospital.
The prison, which has a capacity for 1,500 inmates, holds over 12,000 people, according to an Amnesty International report. Most of them are awaiting trial.
