Protesters in the breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia stormed the parliament in the country’s capital Sukhumi, demanding the resignation of leader Aslan Bzhania. On Friday, protests erupted in response to Abkhazia signing an investment agreement with Russia, which critics fear will prompt rich Russian entrepreneurs to purchase land surrounding the Black Sea, increasing the price of real estate and living costs for local Abkhazians. Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, recognized the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and Ossetia after Russian forces defeated Georgia in a five-day war in 2008.
DW’s Maria Katamadze reports on the unrest.
