Retired US Army Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, who served as Trump’s former National Security Advisor from 2017-2018, recently published a book on his time at the White House aptly titled "At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House." DW’s Eastern Europe editor Roman Goncharenko interviews McMaster on transatlantic cooperation, Trump’s foreign policy, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Trump’s upcoming second term. Most notably, H.R. McMaster tells DW he expected Russia to invade Ukraine and was already pointing to signs that an invasion was imminent back when he served as Trump’s National Security Advisor. McMaster ardently believes Russia’s initial offensive in 2022 was a failure. According to the retired Lt. Gen.: “There’s no way that Russia can accomplish their objectives in Ukraine. And the reason is that the qualitative aspect of combat effectiveness. People like to count tanks, fighter jets and pieces of equipment, but what really matters is the level of training, the nature of the leadership and the determination and will of soldiers. And of course, I think Ukrainian valour has a lot to do with the failed massive offensive in February of 2022.”
