Ballot counting is underway in Romania’s parliamentary elections. Exit polls put the governing Social Democrats in the lead. The vote comes a week after the first round of presidential elections in which a far-right candidate won. Due to Romania’s power sharing laws, the new government will choose the prime minister who will have to work with the winner of next weekend’s presidential run-off. These elections could determine whether Romania continues its pro-EU path, or pivots towards isolationism.
