Israel has captured the peak of Mount Hermon, at an altitude of 2,815 meters (9,236 feet) and just 45 km (28 miles) from Damascus. This move is part of Israel’s strategy to strengthen its presence on the Syrian border, particularly following the fall of Assad’s regime. The occupation of Mount Hermon complements Israel’s control over the Golan Heights, a strategic area that Israel formally annexed in 1981, despite not being internationally recognized as Israeli territory. – The Informant

After over 13 brutal years of war, Syrians are breathing free in Damascus and most of the nation, after the fall of the autocratic Assad dynasty. The fast seizure of the nation by insurgents over the last two weeks rocked the region and the world. Many Syrians are taking stock of the catastrophic damage done by over five decades of Assad rule and what the future holds for the country. PBS News Hour’s @IAmAmnaNawa spoke to Murhaf Jouejati, the former chairman of The Day After, a nonprofit working toward building democratic institutions in Syria, about what to expect from the opposition coming to power.
