US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that the US should take back control of the Panama Canal. At his inauguration, Trump accused China of operating the waterway. But Panamanians, the waterway’s owners, point out that they have invested and expanded the canal since they started managing the it. And they are unhappy with Trump’s threats.
DW spoke to Dennis Hogan from Harvard University about China’s influence over the canal.
