World leaders and Holocaust survivors gathered in the Polish town of Oswiecim to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The ceremony focussed on testimonies of surviving former inmates. Some wore blue and white scarves, the colors worn by the death camp prisoners.
Several international leaders attended the event including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Auschwitz was the largest of the extermination camps and has become a symbol of Nazi Germany’s genocide of six million Jews. Around 1.1 million people, the majority Jewish, were murdered at the site in German-occupied Poland between 1940 and 1945.
