US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Saudi Arabia to lay the groundwork for a meeting between US president Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
He just met with Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in Riyadh. Ending the war in Ukraine is high on Washington’s agenda. Rubio is due to hold talks with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Riyadh on Tuesday. The top diplomats will also discuss restoring ties between Washington and Moscow.
President Volodymir Zelenskyy says Ukraine will not recognize the outcome of the US-Russia talks on ending the war if its representatives are not involved.
Speaking at a press conference, he said that he was not invited to their meeting and that no peace agreement can be made without Ukraine. He will visit Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after talks between Washington and Moscow have ended.
