Women and migration: ‘The Wretched of the Sea’

News reports of people making clandestine crossings into Europe overwhelmingly depict men. But significant numbers of women also take that same path – and the challenges and stigma they face are often specific to their sex. We speak to Camille Schmoll, author of “Les damnées de la mer”, or “The Wretched of the Sea” in English, a book about the rarely-discussed women who choose to risk their lives trying to forge new lives on the other side of the Mediterranean.
